DataMint is operated by Second Moment, Inc., a Wisconsin benefit corporation. By creating an account, buying mints, or using DataMint, you agree to these terms. If you use DataMint on behalf of a university, company, or other organization, you're confirming you're allowed to agree for it. We have tried to write these terms the way we write everything else: so you can actually read them.
DataMint reads collections of documents and extracts structured data from them, guided by a codebook you write. Extraction is performed by AI language models, and AI makes mistakes. DataMint is designed to link each result back to the passage it came from, so you have something concrete to check against — but the links themselves can also be wrong, missing, or mismatched. Treat results as material to check, not findings to accept, and verify anything that matters. We do not guarantee that any extraction, or any evidence link, is complete or correct.
You sign in with your email address. Keep control of that email account, and tell us promptly if you think someone has used your DataMint account without permission; you are responsible for activity you authorize. You can stop using DataMint whenever you like — stopping doesn't by itself reverse a completed purchase. We can also suspend or close accounts (see Acceptable use) and can change or stop offering parts of the service.
Work on DataMint is priced in mints — the unit of prepaid service here. Today, mints cost one U.S. cent ($0.01) each. Mints only buy DataMint services: they are not money, cannot move between accounts, earn no interest, and cannot be cashed out except where these terms or the law provide a refund.
Payments are processed by Stripe; your card details go to Stripe, not to us. We receive transaction records and limited card details, like the brand and last four digits, but full card numbers never live on our servers. The statement descriptor we submit is DATAMINT RESEARCH; your bank may display it a little differently.
Except where the law gives you rights we can't override, mint purchases are non-refundable. Mints never expire, so there's no need to stock up — buy what you need when you need it.
A billing error is not a refund question: if a charge is duplicated or unauthorized, tell us and we'll correct it.
Beyond that, if something went wrong, write to support@datamint.ing and we'll look at it case by case. We can issue discretionary refunds or credit adjustments when a situation warrants it — we are a small company and we would rather keep a researcher than keep ten dollars. Discretion is the point, though: a refund in one case isn't a promise of one in the next. And if the law where you live guarantees refund rights these terms don't mention, those rights win.
We claim no ownership of your documents, your codebooks, or your extraction results. So that we can do the work, you give us permission to store your documents, copy them, and send them to the AI providers that perform extraction — only to provide, secure, and support DataMint. People at Second Moment can see your content when that's genuinely needed to run the service or to help you.
For our own conduct, the promises are simple: we don't train models on your content, we don't sell or rent your documents or results, and we don't use them for advertising. We do look at aggregate, de-identified operational data — how long jobs take, where things fail — to keep the service working.
Extraction runs on third-party AI providers. We choose providers and service tiers whose terms state that your content won't be used to train their models; the current provider list lives at datamint.ing/data-policy. Their terms aren't ours to control — if a provider changed them, we would stop using that provider or tell you. If your documents are sensitive, check the current list against your requirements before you upload.
You can export your results while your account is active and the service is available. Keep your own copies — DataMint is not an archival backup.
We keep operational records (accounts, the billing ledger, job history) to run the service, meet our legal obligations, and debug problems. If you want your account and its documents deleted, email support@datamint.ing. We may verify it's really you, and we'll delete your documents within 30 days — billing and security records we're required to keep will stay, and copies can persist in backups for a while before those roll off.
Only upload documents you have the right to process. You are the only one who can know what's in your documents and what permissions travel with them — we can't see inside your rights. So if a third party brings a claim against us because of documents you uploaded or how you used the results, you agree to cover our costs of dealing with it. That's the bargain that lets a small company process documents it cannot vet, and it reaches only claims your content or your conduct caused.
Some data needs more care than our standard setup: protected health information, identifiable human-subject data, or material under confidentiality terms that restrict third-party processing. Before uploading anything like that, write to karl@datamint.ing — we'll figure out together whether DataMint can support it properly, usually under a separate agreement.
DataMint is professional research tooling for adults. Use it lawfully. Researching health, legal, or policy topics is exactly what it's for; using it to deliver clinical care or medical advice, or as the sole basis for a consequential decision about a person — hiring, credit, housing, insurance, benefits — is not. Don't upload unlawful material, don't probe or disrupt the service or other users' data, don't circumvent metering or safety controls, and don't resell access without an agreement with us.
We may limit, suspend, or close an account when we reasonably believe it breaks these terms, creates a security or legal risk, or involves fraud or a reversed payment — with notice and a chance to fix things when practical, and immediately when not.
DataMint is provided as-is and as-available. To the fullest extent the law allows, we disclaim all implied warranties, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement.
We don't promise uninterrupted or error-free operation. Evidence links help you review results; they don't guarantee an error will be visible. Decisions you make using extraction results are yours.
To the extent the law allows, Second Moment, its owner, and the people and contractors who help operate DataMint are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, or for lost profits, data, or goodwill, arising out of DataMint or these terms. Our combined liability for all claims is capped at the greater of US$100 or the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the event giving rise to the claim. None of this limits liability the law does not allow us to limit — including for our own fraud or willful misconduct — or takes away rights that consumer law guarantees you.
The current version of these terms governs your use of the service. We record the version in effect at each purchase, so there is never a dispute about the price and expiry rules your mints were bought under. Changes apply from their stated effective date; we'll announce material changes in the app, and continuing to use DataMint after that means you accept them. We won't retroactively expand how we use your existing content without asking you. Earlier versions are available on request.
These terms — plus any agreement we've signed with you or your institution, which wins if they conflict — are the whole agreement between us. If a piece of these terms turns out to be unenforceable where you live, the rest still stands. Not enforcing a term today doesn't waive it tomorrow. We may assign this agreement to a successor that takes over DataMint; your account isn't yours to assign or share. We aren't responsible for failures caused by things outside our reasonable control — including an AI provider going down, changing its terms, or cutting off access. Formal notices to you can go to your account email; notices to us go to support@datamint.ing.
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Wisconsin, USA. Business disputes belong in the state or federal courts located in Dane County, Wisconsin; if you're buying as a consumer, you keep whatever courts and rights your local law guarantees.
